Polliwog Room
As the teachers of the youngest children at Nonotuck, we are proud
to witness these children develop from crawling on their stomachs to
walking upright, from putting things in their mouths to speaking words,
from using their bodies for sitting in place to running after a ball,
and from focusing on play as individuals to expanding their awareness
of others. We affirm, encourage, and support these children as they
experience their time with us. Much of what they experience comes in
the form of transitions! The day begins with saying
good-byes...separation can be a difficult transition.
Once comfortable in the room (parents/guardians have gone), choices are
made: it's time for free play: the sensory table is open, there's an
art project set up, the soft climber is set up, etc. ...each choice is
a transition. Around 9:30, morning snack is put out for everyone to
enjoy. Eating is usually a familiar transition. Next, everyone heads
outside or to the indoor climbing structure...this is a transition.
It's 11:00 and it's Blanket Time (back into the classroom). Playing
drums, singing, making noise...transition to being in a group. Lunch is
next, and then, Quiet Time. Resting bodies and minds can be a
transition that is necessary but difficult to accept. Waking up,
afternoon snack is offered, and more transitional free play until
parents/guardians arrive for pick up time. WOW! Their brains and bodies
are developing. Their emotional and social skills are developing. And,
the classroom they spend time in is changing and developing. So, while
in our care and under our watch, the Polliwogs will be in a nurturing,
appropriately challenging, and safe environment with a curriculum
serving them as young individuals who grow and transform before our
eyes!
